Valentina Garavaglia

Full Professor of Theatre in the Faculty of Communication and former Vice-Rectorand Pro-Rector with responsibility for Teaching, is the new Rector of IULM University from 1st November 2024, for the six-year period 2024-2030.

Born in Milan in 1974, she graduated in Modern Humanities from the University of Milan.

She joined IULM in 2010 and since then has continued to carry out studies and research on the history of theatre and the role of performing arts as a tool for education, growth and expression of the individual, with particular attention to the development of theatre in prisons.

Alongside her academic work, Valentina Garavaglia has been intensely active in the world of theatre where she has been responsible for the artistic coordination of festivals and projects in prestigious Italian and international theatres.

She is a member of the Consulta Universitaria del Teatro, sits on the scientific committee of the Fondazione Istituto di Alta Cultura ‘Orestiadi’ and is part of the national coordination group for theatre in prisons. She is the editor of two series of works for the publisher Bulzoni: Le fonti dello spettacolo teatrale and I Quaderni di Gargnano.

In 2015 she won the 20th edition of the Luigi Pirandello National Theatre Prize with the work L'effimero e l'eterno: l'esperienza teatrale di Gibellina (Bulzoni).
